Our Students
Future Histories Lab is a home for students interested in the intersection of scholarship, social change, urban space and the arts. By taking Future Histories courses you can earn an Undergraduate or Graduate Certificate in Urban Humanities.
Whatever your discipline or major, you will have a chance to connect with kindred spirits across campus and take courses from some of the most innovative faculty at UC Berkeley, as well as from practitioners in design, urban policy and planning, the arts, and journalism.
In Future Histories courses you will both study history and plan for the future. In our small, intensive humanities studio classes, you will experiment with making things like videos, websites, maps, walking tours, and exhibitions as a way to share your research publicly.
Making things for the public will help you up your game and learn skills useful out in the world, including collaboration, communication, project management, digital skills, and accuracy and ethical behavior in all that you do.
At a time when COVID-19 may require ongoing remote learning, the supervised fieldwork of our studio courses will provide an opportunity to get away from your screen and out in the world safely. Regardless of social distancing requirements, our courses always use hybrid methods that create human connections while using technology in creative ways.
