Octavia Butler said she loved speculative fiction because “there were no walls to hem you in and there was no human condition that you were stopped from examining.” For social justice advocates, speculative fiction becomes a powerful tool to reimagine solutions to systemic inequities that have historically plagued Black and brown communities. In this course, you will work with Oakland high school students and educators to collect oral histories in order to collaboratively develop graphic novels or theater scripts, drawing from science fiction and magical realism.  You will read both the word and the world and conduct site visits to Oakland schools and communities, becoming immersed in the setting for their narrative and fully understanding the contextual factors impacting the schools. In the spirit of social justice and collective knowledge production, participants will present their final drafts to the community for feedback.
