Local community organizations are at the core of Future Histories Lab. Undergraduate and graduate-level studio courses collaborate with community partners to produce oral histories, maps, websites, videos, and neighborhood plans that can be shared at local libraries, parks, and community centers. Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation
Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) raises awareness of the experience of Immigration into America through the Pacific. AIISF collects and preserves the rich stories and personal journeys of thousands of immigrants and shares them with visitors and everyone living in America through education initiatives and public programs. The Angel Island Immigration Station reminds us of the complicated history of immigration in America. It serves as a symbol of our willingness to learn from our past to ensure that our nation keeps its promise of liberty and freedom.
Chinese Historical Society of America
The Chinese Historical Society of America collects, preserves, and illuminates the history of Chinese in America by serving as a center for research, scholarship, and learning to inspire a greater appreciation for, and knowledge of, their collective experience through exhibitions, public programs, and any other means for reaching the widest audience. Its museum includes permanent exhibits about the people, places and movements in Chinese American culture that have set the stage for our current era.
The Freedom Archives
The Freedom Archives is a non-profit educational archive dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of historical audio, video, and print materials documenting progressive movements and culture from the 1960s to the 1990s. Offering a youth development program focused on engagement with these historical materials and providing media production training, we also produce original documentaries and educational resources for use by schools and organizations as tools for community building and social justice work.
Peralta Hacienda Historical Park
Peralta Hacienda Historical Park serves Oakland’s diverse Fruitvale district as a space for both exploring history and enhancing everyday life in the community. It offers youth environmental education programs, community gardens maintained by the Mien community, a food distribution center, and community events, such as Rumsen Ohlone basket weaving. Since the City of Oakland established the park in 1996, the non-profit Friends of the Peralta Hacienda Park has worked to create exhibits and provide educational experiences for all of Fruitvale’s people.
Friends of the Hoover-Durant Public Library
Friends of Hoover-Durant Public Library (501c3) is a community-based campaign for a new Public Library in our neighborhood by 2022. The Friends of the Hoover Durant Public Library (FOHDPL) exists to bring a public branch library back.
Just Cities
Just Cities convenes all of us to care about the people most impacted by racial injustice, centers their leadership, and moves the collective towards concrete solutions through policy analysis, advocacy, and community-building.
Love the Bulb
Love the Bulb works to prevent the erasure of the creative spirit and complex human history of the Albany Bulb, a former construction debris landfill on San Francisco Bay known for guerrilla art and performance, and for many years, a community of unhoused people.
